An absolute classic, the best version of this dish had crispy shallots, which adds an incredible contrast between the silky, saucy, spicy tofu and crispy shallots. This quick meal takes only 10 minutes to prepare and is perfect for lunch or dinner.
1. In a small bowl, combine grated garlic, finely chopped green onion whites, and granulated sugar. Heat neutral oil in a small pan until hot and then pour it over the garlic mixture, allowing it to bubble for about 30 seconds. Afterwards, add the chili crisp, soy sauce, and rice vinegar to the bowl and stir all ingredients to combine thoroughly.
2. Carefully cut open the package of silken tofu. Gently drain any excess liquid from the package. Flip the tofu onto a serving plate. Using a knife, make lengthwise and crosswise cuts across the top surface of the tofu, cutting approximately 1/3 of the way down into the block.
3. Pour the prepared chili oil mixture evenly over the cut tofu. Use the back of a spoon to gently spread the sauce across the top. Garnish the dish generously with thinly sliced green onion greens, toasted sesame seeds, and crispy shallots. Serve the chili garlic silken tofu on its own as a light meal, or alongside steamed jasmine rice for a more substantial dinner. Enjoy!
